About Garry McLaughlin
The interior world contains mystery and drama; through figurative work and portraiture, I aim to discover what exists beneath the surface. Psychotherapy inspires me to use art to expose the human condition, particularly through various self-portraits. Mysticism and shamanism also move me to reach the symbolic world of archetypes and metaphors, so often seen in so-called primitive art. I mainly work in oil paint, inspired by its tentative beauty: one mark more or less can destroy a work, or bring it to life.
I am working to release myself from the condition of line, and have started to explore the potential of the brushstroke itself, and the brush as an implement of Will.
Born in Rutherglen Glasgow at the unfortunate end of the 70s, I grew up during the Thatcher years with a passion for Art which I found difficult to translate into a workable career.
Having studied Fine Art Photography and Graphic Design, the need to earn a living became too great and I abandoned the art world for a long time, working in Customer Service and Finance. Upon moving into management and the healthcare industry, I decided that I needed to live my original dream.
A Counselling and self-awareness course and a few shamanic journeys later, I have decided to pursue my love of art, with a view to becoming a professional painter.
